Be used to use

If used to refers to regular actions in the past that have already stopped, then the construction be used to is used for present habits.
It expresses an action or situation that is considered normal and familiar for a person.

The construction can be used in the present, past, and future tenses:
am / is / are used to, was / were used to, will be used to.

She is used to getting up early.
He said he was used to the long working hours.
At first I wasn’t comfortable, but soon I was used to speaking in meetings.
After a few months, you will be used to speaking English every day.

Be used to Form

The general sentence structure with be used to:
after a form of the verb be, we use used to,
followed by a gerund (a verb ending in -ing) or a noun.

Subject + be + used to + V-ing
Subject + be + used to + noun

She is used to studying at night.
They are used to the new rules.

Be used to Rule

  • After used to in this construction, we always use a noun or a verb ending in -ing, not the infinitive.
    ❌ She is used to study at night.
    ✅ She is used to studying at night.
  • Be used to describes a state (the result of becoming accustomed), not the process itself.
    The process is expressed by the construction get used to.
    I am used to the schedule now.
    I am getting used to the schedule.
  • It is often used to show contrast: at first something was difficult or unfamiliar, but now it feels normal. In such sentences, you often see words like at first, now, any more, and similar expressions.
    At first the job was stressful, but now I am used to it.

Be used to Negation

To say that someone is not used to something, we add the negation not to the form of the verb be: am not / isn’t / aren’t / wasn’t / weren’t used to.

Subject + be + not used to + V-ing
Subject + be + not used to + noun

He is not used to waking up early.
I am not used to this noise.
They weren’t used to working remotely.

Be used to Questions

In questions, we use the usual inversion with the verb be:
the form am / is / are / was / were comes before the subject.
The rest of the construction (used to + gerund / noun) remains unchanged.

Were they used to living abroad?

In Wh-questions, we add a question word (what, where, why, how, who, etc.) before the verb be. The rest of the structure stays the same.

What is she used to in the new schedule?
Where were they used to living before?
